Slightly richer and more textured is the 2007 Pinot Noir Savage Juliet. Bluer fruits along with raspberry and spring flower characteristics are found in this classic, medium-bodied, delicate, graceful Pinot.

Vivid red. Bright aromas of black raspberry, cinnamon, mace and potpourri, with anise and mineral qualities adding complexity. Fleshy, sweet red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, picking up an exotic candied rose quality with air. The finish leaves pure raspberry and tangy minerals behind. This sweet, open-knit wine is already delicious but possesses the depth and balance to reward at least a few more years of aging. 91 points

2007 Pinot Noir – Anderson Valley: (Noted as Savage Juliet; bottled at 13.6%). An attractive mix of upper and lower register red and blue berry fruit aromas cut with a hint of earth merges into rich, delicious, forward and round yet well-detailed flavors that retain a fine sense of poise and display no obvious sweetness on the lingering finish. Note that this benefited substantially from an hour of air beforehand. Lovely juice. 90/2011+

| Winery Notes: This wine is a blend of the Hein Vineyard and the Wentzel Vineyard in Anderson Valley, approximately 50% from each locale. Native yeast, malolactic fermentation in 40% new French oak barrels for 11 months with 1% co-fermentation of pinot gris yielded this wine. Made from a blend of Pommard and Dijon clones; this wine has deep garnet color, dried herb earth and spice nose, sandalwood, structured with good depth of fruit and cherry flavors that linger. 200 cases produced She was the captain and center for her high school basketball team. When she and my grandfather married, she wanted a woman minister to perform the ceremony. She was a teacher of literature to her students and a pioneer of organic agriculture and biodynamic farming (I found pamphlets of Pfeiffer's early work in her library). Today these accomplishments would be commendable; in 1932 they were ground breaking. When Zelda Loeta Estes Smith passed on a few years ago, my family eventually got to the task of cleaning out the relics of the ancestral home of my grandparents. In the attic, my daughters and I found a stack of hat boxes filled with hats from a past era (she loved hats!). Bringing back very early memories for me, as I recall seeing Loeta (she hated the name Zelda) wearing some of these years ago. On the boxes, the name "Savage Juliet" figured proudly. A womens clothing store from the 20's and 30's, "Savage Juliet" was a favorite of my grandmothers. Very stylish and classic, it fits her that she would chose hats and clothing from this now long forgotten and long since past art deco clothing store. But stylish and classic fit Loeta. Now and then, my daughters try on some of these hats. Gotta love that! Savage Juliet is also the name of an all girl alternative country band these days, also very fitting don't you think? |
