The 2006 Alta Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from three estate vineyards and spent 18 months in 80% new French oak. Opaque violet in color, it delivers a fragrant bouquet of cinnamon, fresh herbs, tobacco, cassis, and black currant. This is followed by a medium-bodied Cabernet with an elegant personality. On the palate notes of cigar box and leather emerge from the wine’s velvety texture. It conceals enough fine-grained tannin to evolve for 4-6 years. This lengthy effort will offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2021.

Quite ripe, but nicely focused, with a juicy core of raspberry, boysenberry and mulled currant fruit laced with licorice snap and roasted vanilla. The long, polished finish is very suave. Drink now through 2011. 3,100 cases made. –JM

Good deep ruby-red. Musky black raspberry, dark chocolate and a hint of pepper on the nose. Suave, sweet and energetic, with lovely lift and definition to the creamy dark fruit and chocolate flavors. Ultimately sweeter than the Catena Alta cabernet. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins that arrive late but saturate the front teeth and build. 91(+?) points

Lemon rind and prune are the primary aromas, but there’s also a hint of green bean in here. The palate is dark and concentrated but not exactly high voltage in terms of power. Flavors of raisin, cassis, fig and chocolate are rich and ripe, while the finish runs dark. Almost overripe but seemingly more jammy than overdone. Drink now through 2012. M.S. (12/31/2010) — 90
