Grimaldi's 1998 Le Coste exhibits a dark garnet color as well as a classic Barolo bouquet of melted road tar, rose petals, cherry syrup, tobacco, and spice box. Deep, textured, full-bodied, with sweet kirsch liqueur-like flavors infused with creosote/tar, and a moderately tannic finish, this old style, intense effort will drink well between 2003-2018

($60; aged entirely in barriques, 50% of which were new) Bright medium red. Aromatic nose combines plum, chocolate, tobacco, mocha and spicy oak. Sweet, supple and smooth, with the wine's pronounced chocolatey oakiness obscuring its Barolo character. Rich finishing flavors of cherry and tobacco. (Marc de Grazia; numerous importers)

Big and rich nose, with lots of crushed berry and minerals. Full-bodied, with mouthpuckering tannins and a rich and long finish. Give this time. Best after 2006. 375 cases made. (JS)
