Derby Deals
Brown Derby Stores is celebrating our 75th year in business in 2012 and, to commemorate this milestone, we are offering some great wines at amazing prices so that you will have something to celebrate as well!
Please note that due to Missouri state regulations, we cannot advertise the regular price in comparison to the sale price; however, we can assure you that the sale prices will be some of the lowest you’ll find in the country. The sale items will consist of wines that we have specifically selected for this event and will run the gamut from inexpensive daily drinkers to pricier cellar selections.
Here’s the deal – we don’t buy wines that we wouldn’t want to drink ourselves; however, like many wine buyers, both private and commercial, we occasionally purchase a bit more than we should. We’ve found ourselves looking at some truly stunning wines that are languishing on the racks and rather than continuing to shuffle them around the cellar trying to make room for newer arrivals, we’re going to price them at rates that will be very difficult to resist!
All our wines have been stored at proper temperature and humidity levels since their initial deliveries – considering we have approximately 5,000 square feet of cellar storage, with industrial racking that nearly doubles that space, we’re talking about a serious commitment to keeping the wine in the same condition in which it arrived. We take storage very seriously so that you don’t have to worry about the provenance of the wine you purchase from us.
Terms: We will process orders according to the time they were received. If a limited stock item sells out prior to the time your order is placed, we will notify you as soon as possible. Once a wine is gone, it’s gone: first come, first served. No additional discounts will be given on the sale wines – all pricing is net. Payment is due at the time the order is placed. No refunds will be given for previously purchased items. We cannot accept returns on wines that have been shipped before we deem the weather appropriate. Additional terms may apply.
Going, going...
2002 Louis Latour Criots-Batard-Montrachet, just $99.75 per bottle! - Added 6/20/2012
From one of Burgundy's most recognized producers comes this amazing deal on Grand Cru Chardonnay!
Rated 92-94 points in The Wine Advocate, 90 points on Burghound.com.
2006 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast - only $34.75 per bottle! - Added 7/11/2012
Pick up a few bottles of the Sonoma Coast bottling to compare with its Russian River Valley sibling! You can't go wrong with Williams Selyem Pinot Noir, particularly at this price!
Rated 91 points in Tanzer's IWC and 87 points in The Wine Enthusiast Magazine
2006 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Vaudesir - $49.75 per bottle! - Added 7/14/2012
Here is a Grand Cru Chablis that, at age six, is just starting to shed a bit of its youthful acidity and is coming together quite nicely. We've been drinking a lot more Chablis here at the store (unfortunately not usually Grand Cru!) and these are simply fantastic wines that put some excitement back into the Chardonnay category.
Rated 92-94 points on Allen Meadows' Burghound.com, 91 points in Tanzer's IWC, 90-91 points in The Wine Advocate and 17.5/20 points by Jancis Robinson MW
2001 Silvio Grasso Barolo Vigna Plicotti - $39.75 per bottle! - Added 7/18/2012
Here we have an eleven-year-old bottle of Nebbiolo that is finally starting to enter a great drinking phase. We've done the cellaring, now you can enjoy the drinking!
Rated 90 points in both Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar and The Wine Spectator
2006 Big Basin Syrah Mandalla - $24.75 per bottle! - Added 7/19/2012
We love Syrah here at the Wine Center and why we still have any of this wine around is a bit of a mystery. This is a nicely-balanced Syrah, Californian at heart but with some Northern Rhone Valley inspiration. Boutique wine at thrift-shop pricing - can't beat that!
Rated 87-89 points in The Wine Advocate.
2005 Domaine Georges Vernay Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge - $59.75 per bottle! - Added 7/24/2012
Perhaps better known for outstanding Condrieu, Domaine Georges Vernay also makes some terrific Côte-Rôtie! It is nearly impossible to find Côte-Rôtie of this quality at this price point - Syrah and Northern Rhône Valley fans should not miss this opportunity!
Rated 94 points in The Wine Spectator, 92 point in Tanzer's International Wine Cellar and 88 points in The Wine Advocate.
2001 Silvio Grasso Barolo Ciabot Manzoni - $49.75 per bottle! - Added 7/25/2012
If Piedmont had Grand Cru vineyards, this one would surely be among their ranks! At eleven years old, this Nebbiolo is just entering a lovely drinking window. Compare pricing around the internet and you will know that you're getting a great buy here!
Rated 92 points in The Wine Advocate and 91 points in Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
2003 Domaine de Panisse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Noble Rélévation - $39.75 per bottle! - Added 7/26/2012
Here's another solid buy! This wine has been shuffled around the cellar for a few years; the 2003 vintage was the only one in our inventory and we simply forgot about it until now. Being a curious lot, we had to pop the cork on a bottle last night and discovered that it is drinking quite well, with lots of Grenache character on the nose with just a hint of the extra-warm 2003 vintage showing up on the finish. More classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape than one of the muscular, alcoholic elixirs that often crops up in a hot year. This was originally considerably higher in price and we need to move it on out the door (figuratively, as it is still way too hot to recommend shipping). If you're looking for an "under-the-radar" CdP bargain, this is the one!
Rated 90 points in The Wine Advocate
2004 Behrens & Hitchcock Kenefick Ranch Cuvée - only $39.75 per bottle! - Added 7/26/2012
This was one of the last actual Behrens & Hitchcock wines we received before the winery's transformation into Erna Schein, and it is a good example of Les Behrens' winemaking style at the time. The bottle says "Unfiltered Reserve" on the label and it is still a purple-black, Cab-based monster that is just now starting to hit a nice window for drinking. Perhaps not "Ink-Grade", but will still stain your pearly-whites by the end of the bottle. Priced to move!
Rated 92-94 points in The Wine Advocate
2006 Junge-Feuerbacher Family Wines Syrah, Stolpman Vineyard - only $19.75 per bottle! - Added 7/28/2012
2006 Junge-Feuerbacher Family Wines Syrah, Stolpman Vineyard - just $19.75 per bottle!
This Syrah was selected by Brown Derby owner Ron Junge and operations manager Brad Feuerbacher for their own label, which was blended, aged and bottled at the old CrushPad facility in San Francisco. The juice came from the stellar Stolpman Vineyard and this wine represents an amazing bargain for any Syrah fan. The 2006 is really hitting its stride right now and can continue to be enjoyed for several years to come. (I know I plan on picking up a few bottles of this wine at this super-low price!)

2007 Zepaltas Pinot Noir La Cruz Vineyard, Sonoma Coast - $24.75 per bottle! - Added 7/31/2012
Here is a five-year-old Pinot Noir from California's Sonoma Coast, ready to drink and enjoy! Like most of our Derby Deals on Pinot Noir, this will move quickly - don't hesitate!
Rated 90 points in both The Wine Spectator and Tanzer's IWC
2007 Zepaltas Pinot Noir Suacci Vineyard, Sonoma Coast - only $24.75 per bottle! - Added 7/31/2012
Different wine than the La Cruz bottling, but still 100% tasty Pinot Noir! Five years on, drinking perfectly - don't miss it!
Rated 89 points in The Wine Spectator and 88 points in Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
2006 Wind Gap Wines Syrah, Sonoma Coast - $24.75 per bottle! - Added 8/1/2012
By now, you might have guessed that we enjoy Syrah around here - here's one we think you'll enjoy too! Wind Gap is Pax Mahle's winery, and Pax knows a thing or two about making good Syrah. Only 89 cases of this wine were produced for the entire galaxy and we happen to have two of those cases in stock as of this mailing - get it while you can!
Rated 93 points in Tanzer's IWC, 91 points in Jeb Dunnuck's Rhone Report and 88 points in The Wine Advocate
2006 Poonawatta Estate "The Cuttings" Shiraz, Eden Valley - only $29.75 per bottle! - Added 8/1/2012
Here is a great bottle of Shiraz from Australia - we found a little bit of this 'down under' some other boxes of wine and thought we'd move it to the top of the pile. The fruit for this wine comes from cuttings taken from a vineyard planted in 1880, hence the name of the wine.
Rated 93 points in The Wine Spectator, 91 points in Tanzer's IWC and 87 points in The Wine Advocate
2004 The Colonial Estate "Exile" Shiraz, Barossa Valley - $94.75 per bottle! - Added 8/1/2012
This Aussie powerhouse comes from Jonathan Maltus, owner of Château Teyssier in Bordeaux and World's End Wines in Napa. Maltus makes his Australian wine using French techniques, yet produced in a big, showy style. This is the lowest price listed on this wine as of this morning.
Rated 96 points in The Wine Advocate, 95 points Tanzer, and 85 points in The Wine Spectator
2003 N. Joly Savennières Clos Les Sacrés - only $17.75 per bottle! - Added 8/3/2012
Here is something a bit different - a bio-dynamically produced Chenin Blanc with nine years of age on it, still fresh, crisp and drinking wonderfully. Cool grape variety, great wine, and a stellar producer from an underrated region of the wine world. Pass the crab cakes and pour me another glass!
Rated 91 points in The Wine Enthusiast Magazine and 88 points in The Wine Spectator
2008 Evening Land Pinot Noir "Blue Label", California - just $17.75 per bottle! - Added 8/3/2012
Evening Land made a big splash with their entry into the wine world and is still rocking the boat. They released a couple of "Blue Label" Pinots in '08, one from Oregon and the other from California. Oddly (or not so much considering the vintage), the Oregon bottling received quite a bit of press and sold quickly; however, the very competent California bottling is still hanging out a couple of years later. It is a good buy at its regular price and a steal at this sale price! Hurry, this one won't last long!
Rated 89 points in Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
2008 Siduri Pinot Noir, Chehalem Mountains, Oregon - only $19.75 per bottle! - Added 8/6/2012
2008 was a very good year for Pinot Noir in Oregon and this Chehalem Mountains AVA offering from Siduri is simply singing right now! Great wine, low price - don't miss it!
Rated 89 points on Burghound.com, 88 points in The Wine Enthusiast Magazine and 87 points in The Wine Spectator
2006 Domaine du Pegau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - just $54.75 per bottle! - Added 8/8/2012
I guess you can have too much of a good thing! The 2006 Southern Rhône vintage was solid, but greatly overshadowed by the powerful 2007 vintage. We have a good supply on this particular wine at the moment, but it will eventually sell out at this price. Pick up a few bottles while it is here and priced to drink!
Rated 94 points in Tanzer's IWC, 94 points in The Wine Advocate, 93 points in The Rhone Report, 93 points in The Wine Specator and 91 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine
2002 Louis Latour Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles, Grand Cru - $149.75 per bottle! - Added 8/9/2012
2002 was a pretty darn good vintage for white Burgundy; you typically can't touch a Grand Cru of this caliber for a price this low! Louis Latour makes a lot of wine and their Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles is widely considered to be their top cuvée, often outshining their Le Montrachet bottling. It doesn't get much better than this, particularly at this price point!
Rated 91-94 points in The Wine Advocate and 93 points on Burghound.com
2003 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet Hameau de Blagny, Premier Cru - $44.75 per bottle! - Added 8/9/2012
Here's another of the great white wine producers of Burgundy, Etienne Sauzet. I've drank several bottles of Sauzet's wines over the years and have yet to be disappointed with the wines; I'm either very lucky, or Sauzet is just one consistently fine producer (judging by other factors in life, I'm leaning toward the latter!). We've opened up quite a few 2003s here over the past year or so and they've been drinking splendidly. Don't pass up this opportunity!
Rated 88 points in The Wine Advocate, 87 points on Burghound.com and 86 points in Tanzer's IWC
2000 Maison Leroy Beaune Marconnets, Premier Cru - $59.75 per bottle! - Added 8/14/2012
This is a wine from the extensive cellar collection of Maison Leroy, owned by Lalou Bize-Leroy of Domaine d'Auvenay and Domaine Leroy. Maison Leroy is her negotiant property, made from purchased juice but with the wine brought up under Leroy's watchful eye. We have had this particular wine in our own cellar since 2005; it came to us through Leroy's sole US importer and has excellent provenance. This is Premier Cru Burgundy from one of the finest producers in France; we have had several bottles of this wine over the years and it is always a treat to taste.

2005 Joseph Drouhin Chablis Les Clos, Grand Cru - $44.75 per bottle! - Added 8/16/2012
Here we have another Grand Cru Chablis from the 2005 vintage, this time from Domaine Joseph Drouhin. Drouhin makes some elegant wines and this is no exception. At an age when many Chardonnays would be starting to fall apart, this one is just coming together. Can't go wrong with Les Clos!
Rated 92 points by Allen Meadows (Burghound.com) and 89+ by Stephen Tanzer in his International Wine Cellar
2005 Joseph Drouhin Chablis Vaudesir, Grand Cru - just $39.75 per bottle! - Added 8/16/2012
Yet another grand Grand Cru Chablis! Only slightly less prestigious than Les Clos, Vaudesir is another great source for amazing Chardonnay. Ready to drink and enjoy!
Rated 91 points in Burghound.com, 91 points in The Wine Spectator and 90+ points in Tanzer's IWC
2000 Domaine Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze, Grand Cru - $99.75 per bottle! - Added 8/17/2012
It's not everyday that Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is put on sale, but today's deal does just that! This one is ready for your Burgundy glass or a spot in your cellar.
Rated 91 points in Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
2000 Fanti Brunello di Montalcino - $44.75 per bottle! - Added 8/20/2012
Here is a twelve-year old Brunello di Montalcino that has come together nicely over the years. Perfectly stored in our temperature and humidity controlled cellar, now ready to be served on your table.
Rated 91 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine and 88 points in The Wine Spectator
2004 Domaine Georges Vernay Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge - $44.75 per bottle! - Added 8/20/2012
Here's a dandy! Only a few bottles of this dynamite Côte-Rôtie remain in stock. If you like a classic Northern Rhône Syrah, this is the wine for you!
Rated 91 points in The Wine Spectator and 90 points in Tanzer's IWC
2006 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard - $59.75 per bottle! - Added 8/21/2012
Here we have one of Oregon's finest, with pricing reminiscent to that of last century! Six years of bottle age on this one put it around the peak (still on the youthful side) of its drinking window, with plenty of gas left in the tank. Really good Pinot Noir right here!
Rated 93 points in The Wine Spectator and 91 points in Tanzer's IWC
1997 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée - $99.75 per bottle! - Added 8/22/2012
Here we have a perfectly-stored bottle of Côte-Rôtie which, at fifteen years of age, is fully mature but not over the hill. Robert Parker gave this one an estimated drinking window through 2020, so there should still be some gas in the tank. We received this wine upon its initial release and it has been resting in our cellar ever since. This wine has a 91.8 point community tasting note average on CellarTracker.com, so "real-world" tastings have born out the critical reviews, to some extent. Paying under $100 for a bottle of Chapoutier La Mordorée doesn't seem possible these days, yet here it is.

2005 Bodegas Muga Torre Muga - $59.75 per bottle! - Added 8/23/2012
Don't know what to say about this one except that it is an awesome bottle of Tempranillo at a great price!
Rated 94 in Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, 94 points in The Wine Advocate, 94 points in The Wine Enthusiast Magazine and 92 points in The Wine Spectator
2008 Wind Gap Wines Rana Red Blend - $29.75 per bottle! - Added 8/23/2012
Here is an interesting and tasty Rhône-styled blend from Pax Mahle, consisting of 58% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and 12% Syrah. Although still youthful, it is drinking pretty well right now. Well worth checking into at this price!
Rated 91-93 points in Jeb Dunnuck's Rhone Report, 91 points in Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar and 91 points in The Wine Advocate
2007 Château Lynch Bages Blanc de Lynch Bages, Pauillac - $37.75 per bottle! - Added 8/24/2012
Here we have a white Bordeaux from Lynch-Bages, a winery that has really been increasing in quality and prestige over the past couple of decades. Best know for their claret, they also make a miniscule amount of white wine. This blend of 45% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Sémillon, and 10% Muscadelle presents a nice combination of fruit and minerality that would pair wonderfully with a roast chicken. Very good bottle of wine right here!
Rated 89 points in The Wine Enthusiast Magazine and 85-88 points in The Wine Spectator
2006 Gemstone Proprietary Red Wine - $109.97 per bottle - Added 9/07/2012
Here is a great red blend (primarily Cabernet Sauvignon) from Gemstone, with winemaker Philippe Melka crafting this vintage. This is just now coming together and should provide some excellent drinking over the next decade or so.
Rated 93 points in The Wine Advocate, 90(+?) points by Stephen Tanzer and 92-94 points in a Wine Spectator barrel tasting note.
2009 Justin Vineyards Savant - $22.97 per bottle! - Added 9/10/2012
68% Syrah + 32% Cabernet Sauvignon = 100% Tasty!
Rated 93 points in The Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "A delightful wine, one of Justin’s best in quite some time. The blend is Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and fruit is the star, in the form of ripe, lush blackberries and currants. You’ll also find complex notes of grilled meats, chocolate, herbs and spices, wrapped into a perfectly soft, delectable texture. Drink now–2015."
